1974-1979
The Travelers Four
The Travelers Four was a country band from Zanesville, Ohio that traveled the midwest throughout the 1970’s. The band was: Don Smith, bass guitar and vocals; Rick Smith, lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Larry Bailey, drums and vocals; and lead guitarist (who played anything with strings on it) Ted Hurley, who in 1977 left the band and was replaced by lead guitarist Dick Sprankle. T-4 as they were known, was a lounge type country band with outstanding vocals. Ricks unique vocal ability, and Dons terrific harmonies were hard to match. But when Larry joined in, it was magical. Add the supurb guitar work of Ted Hurley, and then later Dick Sprankle, and the sound was amazing.
After firing their booking agent and moving to Arkansas in 1979, the band unfortunately split up and all went their seperate ways. Don became a truck driver, Rick moved to Illinois, Dick went back to Zanesville, and Larry got a call from old T-4 guitarist Ted Hurley, who asked him to join his band in Reynoldsburg, Ohio called “Cold Turkey”.
Since then Rick and Don Smith played in a band called “Changing Times” with Al Blake, and have played together in their family band “The Smith Brothers” and in other bands around their home town.
Unfortunately Ted Hurley passed away in 2004.
Dick Sprankle, who no longer plays music, is living in Zanesville with his wife and family.
Larry Bailey moved to Arizona in 1986 where he currently plays drums with the Pat James Band.
Ted Hurley played Lead Guitar before Dick Sprankle
